Koya’s Camp

The Desert

Nebuna

After stitching up Makuga using the first aid station on the shuttle, Koya bandaged her shoulder where Rorke had managed to tag her with his blaster. It was superficial and didn’t even hurt after she sprayed the numbing agent on the wound.

Once she was sure that Makuga would be okay, she went back outside the shuttle to find her people. She dragged the bodies of Tyko and the others onto a pyre made from wood found around the campsite.

Then she lit a match and burned them. There were no burials for the warriors of Wulvgard. There had never been.

Soon afterward, Makuga joined Koya to watch their friends burn. The worst of the storm had passed this region, and the raging fire reflected in his dark eyes as he recited the prayer of the Undying Light.

“You should be resting,” Koya told him.

If Rorke cut any deeper, Makuga would’ve been on the burning pile with the rest of them.

Makuga shrugged. “I’ve had worse.”

“Not that I’ve ever seen,” she said. “Not even when we took Lord Nekro’s fortress.”

“Back when things were simple and still made sense.”

Simple. “I didn’t create the current situation, Makuga. I’m just doing my best to deal with it.”

“It isn’t our job to worry about the Skern. Or Nebuna.” The anger in Makuga’s eyes was growing with the pyre flames. “And certainly not the city.”

Makuga practically spat out the word “city.”

“Without the city, then what becomes of us?” Koya said. “Who hires us to do their dirty work? And there goes the family business.”

Makuga’s laugh bordered on a scoff. “That’s your problem, Koya. That’s always been your problem. The fact that you think of it as dirty work. We’re warriors doing what we are born to do. At least we used to be.”

“If you have such a problem with me, then why do you follow me?” Koya asked, tired of his innuendo and bickering.

There was a long pause while Makuga stared into the fire, his compatriots and brother now burnt beyond recognition among the kindling. “I’ve been asking myself the same question.”

That hurt, and now they were both skirting a dangerous territory in their relationship. Besides, there was no time for bickering over what was done.

“I’m going to find Charlie. We can discuss it when I get back,” Koya said, already taking steps to Tyko’s ship.

“If you leave to find Bravo, then don’t bother coming back,” Makuga said, with a look that Koya couldn’t have mistaken for anything else but contempt.

Was that a threat or a request?

“What are you going to do? Replace me?” she asked.

“Yes.”

Koya continued to the shuttle, deciding not to respond.

“And Koya…” Makuga shouted. “Be thankful I’m not taking it from you the same way you took it from Kaden.”

Makuga was gone when Koya turned to look back.
